I bought this at the same time I got Darkness.
I used to like playing Doom and then Quake on the Pc's so I thougfht a bit of nostalgia would be cool. In the box you get a bonus disk with Quake 2 on it... very old school grapghics but still a playable game non-the-less. OK Quake 4.... the graphics are great... maybe not cutting edge but more than good enough.... the dark corridors and the like are very atmospheric indeed.... some little scary touches reminded me of the original Unreal on the PC... you turn a corner to see a flighting shadow of some beasty or other running around a corner... or some poor marine being dragged under a door... that sort of tension building thing. The story line is as all space monster marine hero stories go... you are the anti-hero and it is your job to kill all bad things. The controls are perfect for the 360... usually find that a mouse is better but this time I found the controller to be ideal... the selection of weapons are great... ranging from pistol blasters to Darkness wave guns... sniper weapons and machine guns... rocket launchers and grenade launchers and each and every weapon can be up graded too... so for instance the rocket launcher eventually gets upgraded to to guided rocket launcher etc. The AI is cool and at times really good... at other times it sucks big time.... don't they all??? Your team mates are interesting as some are medics and some are tech engineers... the medics can restore your health and the tech's can rebuild your body armour.... because of this you become VERY protective of your buddies in arms and often step to the fore to protect them. The puzzles are simple enough and the linear movement of the game keeps you heading in the right direction. All in all I have found Quake 4 to be a great little game... i rate this well abvove Darkness anmd on a par with Gears when it comes to a single player game.... as for online... forget it.... no-one actually plays this game anymore (think it is a year old now) so finding someone to play against is very differcult. The joy of this game is that you will find it in the bargain buckets.... I paid some $20 for it and then I had discount (EDGE card holder (EB Games)). too. I still have Quake 2 to play so two games for the price of one very cheap one and a longer play-time and fun-time than Darkness. There is a demo availoable for this on LIVE by the way. Des  |
