Well, I always knew it could be done but never got round to doing it. However, I had a few spare hours last night and I spent them setting this up. Using TVersity, a superb completely free application, I can now stream any type of video (plus photos and music) directly to my 360 over my wireless and despite my PC being in another room. Although the 360 only supports a few video codecs, TVersity automatically detects what the 360 can play and if it can't play back a video codec you select, it will have the PC convert it on the fly and stream the compatible video over the lan.
It works a treat and anyone with the facilities to do it I suggest you set it up. I was watching a Xvid copy of Hot Fuzz last night that would never normally play on the 360 without the pain in the arse, time consuming process of conversion. Oh, and apparently TVersity works with the PS3 too although I obviously can't confirm that. http://tversity.com/home http://www.360-hq.com/xbox-tutorials-34.html - A quick tutorial to get it going.

Oh man! That ROCKS! I just found out how to do that when I installed the Zune software on my computer to get a bunch of music and videos and what not on my brother's Zune, but it wouldn't let me watch all my AVI movies, I converted them to .mp4, but they look like sh** and it was just not worth it IMO. I'm going to watch the 40 year old Virgin on my 360 now. :P
I'll test it with the PS3 unless it needs Linux on it, if it does, I'm too lazy to do that right now. EDIT:Dang.... It was all looking good, until I found out that it doesn't look for folders inside of folders, for example: If you put: "D:\My Media" It won't look in: "D:\My Media\My Music" "D:\My Media\My Videos" "D:\My Media\My Pictures" That really sucks for my Music... Because all of My Music is arranged by Band, for example: "D:\My Media\My Music\Journey" "D:\My Media\My Music\ACDC" "D:\My Media\My Music\Def Leppard" I doubt I'll be using it a whole lot... EDIT 2: Nevermind, it's looking good again, it just took a while to update. It's working now. EDIT 3: Well, it all looked good, and short videos played really well, but than, I started the 40 Year Old Virgin, and sometimes, it'll stop for a minute or so, than the audio continues like regular, but the VIDEO goes REALLY fast. I think that this computer just isn't good enough to use it well... |

Yes mate, a decent computer is needed as it literally changes the codec on the fly and sends out the results over the lan. My system I think only just manages to do it with no lag at all and it's a 3.02 Ghz P4 with 1gb of ram. I suspect anything less than 1gb of ram and 2.8Ghz CPU will result in choppy video. I watched the whole of Hot Fuzz and 300 with no stops or audio problems. What's your computer spec? Also, are you running wireless from your computer to your router and if so are you using G or B? It needs to be G (54 Mbps) to be honest.
The only issue I have with it is that you can't seem to rewind and fast forward, although I have heard there are other apps out there that allow this. I am going to look into this and post the results here.

They're both hooked up through Ethernet. I think my internet is G, but I'm not sure, doesn't matter though. Yeah, I'm not a fan of the no rewinding and fast forwarding, or resuming, but you can pause and unpause it.
I'm sure it's my computer than, my computer's got like 1.10 Ghz and like 512 MB of sloooooooow ram, I think it's only like 333 mhz. I'm getting a Dual Core 2.8 Ghz with 1 GB of 800 mhz ram at the end of July. Than probably for Christmas, I'm going to upgrade to 4 GBs of ram, fastest computer EVER! jk, that's probably super overkill, but atleast you'd know you'd ALWAYS have enough. |

Sorry to bring up this topic, especially with a double post, but did you ever find out what the program that converts on the fly with rewinding and fast forwarding is?
EDIT: Okay, I think I may have found a good one. It's called Xploder Media Center, it looks good and sounds like it converts on the fly and you can rewind and fast forward, only thing is it's $40. I think I'll still get it though... EDIT 2: I guess that it's just for the original Xbox or something? Also, it'd mod the Xbox, and I don't want to do that, they'll ban me. |

Apparently not being able to rewind and fast forward is a limitation of the Xbox itself and nothing on the PC will be able to fix it.
For this reason I no longer use this and I just convert to MP4 and put any videos on my 400gb external hard disk. Plug it into the 360 and away it goes.
