I don't think you have to have the HDD, but someone like Pagnell would be more suitable for this question since he owns and knows a lot about the Xbox 360. But that sounds about right, I know that with the original Xbox that you just need the subscription and a ethernet cable.

alrightt this is what you need for xbox live:
-some sort of subscription, whether is be 1,3,or 12 month. i would go for 12 month, its the best deal. -internet connection.my 360 is in my room so i just have a ethernet cable running from my router to the console, but if you cant do that you can either buy the $100 wireless adapter made by Xbox or ive heard people hook up like a $30 wireless router that you would use for a computer for it, but im not too sure about that one. -as for the HDD hard drive, i dont think you absolutely NEED it but it is highly reccomended. without it, you cant download new maps, features, or whatever else for the game. For instance, GoW just came out with two new maps and if you dont have them downloaded then you cant play in about 20% of all games hosted. -the headset that connects to the controller you should probably get. not necessary but its nice talking to your friends in the game. i think thats it, correct me if i missed something 8)

Quick checklist of what i have.
Xbox 360 HDD Controller Wired headset Wireless network adapter (xbox one) Wireless router (check microsofts approved wireless routers, belkin work) 4Mgps Broadband, try to make sure you have no download limit For a wired connection Xbox 360 HDD Controller Wired headset Ethernet cable Wired router(if your modem dosent have that function already) 4Mgps Broadband, try to make sure you have no download limit And last but not least live gold membership. 12 month is the best, you should have one month free with the xbox, or one that come with the game(GOW).

The guys have it covered.
Have a look around before you rush out and buy your 12 month ticket as some headsets come with a package containing a 3 month trial etc.... so you can spend a little and try out the 'LIVE' before you commit to 12 months. As for the hard drive..... er.... you need one to be honest... not only for the maps but also for the game upgrades and then their is of course the live arcade to download games... and demos... etc. Des  |

I think he has one, so he's set, if you've got the $50 to burn and would use it a lot, then I'd get the 12 month. Best value and mine came w/ a game and headset. But make sure you'd actually use it, I got a 12 month one for my Xbox like 2 years ago, 2005, I used mine for about 1 or 2 months maybe, than just stopped using it all together.
