I was just thinking...
When the PS1 came out the games were on CD and took a few hundred Mb each. When the PS was first launched people commented on how the disks had way to much room than needed yet by the end of the PS1 games were being squeezed onto the CDs. Then came the PS2 and DVD with a few Gb of storage, again people commented that we would not really need all that room but at the end of the PS2 era games are being squeezed onto DVD's. Now comes the PS3 and BluRay and guess what, I've heard plenty of comments on how we don't need all that space but I'd be willing to bet that by the end of this generation the games are taking up the whole disks. Now, you may be wondering why I'm talking about the Playstations when this was posted in the Xbox forum. Don't worry, this all leads to a point. The Xbox360 games come on DVD. To me that seems like a bit of a flaw. When games get bigger and bigger they are not going to be able to fit effectivly onto DVD's so what are Microsoft going to do? They can't really switch formats to HD-DVD at some point as it would leave people NEEDING to purchase the HD-DVD drive. It seems to me that by sticking with last generations storage medium Microsoft may have a serious problem later down the line. They could, I guess, Offer games on HD-DVD for those that have the drive and on multiple DVDs for those that don't but that seems like such an ineffective way of doing so. You're opinions on this matter?

Hahahahaha I've been thinking of the SAME thing....Mircosoft shot themselves in the foot by sticking with the old 5GB DVD's...
I mean sure multiple disks for one game would work...I mean just look at FFVII that had like 3 disks...but that game didnt have online capabilities...so mutiple disks for an online game...I dont see how microsoft could do that...they're screwed for now...

5 Gigs of storage space... hmm that's gi-huge more than enough for games... wonder how much room COD3 takes up... guess not as much as 5 gigs by any means... hardly shot themselves in the foot but time will tell.
And as for screwed... come on Ryder lighten up... the 360 is an AWESOME piece of kit and if it had SONY written on the front case you would be all over it and needing a tissue to help clean up your mess  so stop being a complete blinkered fan-boy... it's getting tedious. I am sorry you didn't get your PS3 but your reasons for not are interesting... you didn't want to get an early one because of the expected faults.... is SONY that bad a manufacturer that you, of all people (read Fan-Boy), expect the quality to be so POOR??? now that's a sad state of affairs to be true. Did I say once in that last post that the 360 is a piece of out dated hardware, no I didnt because it's defenitly not... Though, I am stating that over the next 5 years, the games are going to grow in size and the 5GB's of space isnt going to cut it with all the HD stuff put into the game... And though I am a fan-boy as you cal it, I still don't trust any company with new releases buddy... EDIT: Hey I've checked how big COD3 is and I can assure you it takes up most if not all of the 5GB's...

My comments were more roughly aimed at your expected Microsoft knocks and pro SONY stance rather than at any specific comments.
You are right I do not know you... in the same way I do not understand the blinkered attitude  You did state that the 360 is screwed for now because it used old 5 gig dvd technology.... it does not take any leap of faith to read into that statement that you believe the 360 is outdated with old technology... Perhaps I read too much into your written words or perhaps one should be more precise when writting such words  In the begining there was media on tape then floppy disk then SD hard floppies and the HD floppies LS120 floppies etc... and each time the media became too small for the 'data' they either devoloped bigger media storage or they 'packed' the data to make room.... think of it as a garage... if you have a double garage and some junk to store you just toss the lot in and shut the door as you lnow you have lots of room.... peek inside and the floor is covered with junk... to all intensive purposes you have filled the room of the garage..... now start again but this time with a single garage... instead of tossing the junk in you think about how it will best fit.. you put things inside of other things (imbedding) and when you have finished you realise that you actually HAVE room left... unlike the just throw the junk in technique. The point I am trying to make is that you should not discount the hardware so fast.... but on the otherhand no matter what hardware is in a new machine it is out of date by the time it is established. And as you said over the next 5 years!!!! in 5 years time the PS3 will be outdated... hell so will you  Des  |

...they're screwed for now... I know Gates will find a way to squeeze more into the DVD's, but it will never amount to the size of an HD-DVD or Bluray disk...if Microsoft hadn't rushed out the 360 then this problem wouldn't have occurred... Oh and I said 5 years because Sony has already promised to stay with the PS3 and not make another console for another 8-10 years... On a side note - is the 360 capable of reading dual-layered Dvds?[/quote]

OK...being a loyal SONY customer for over 10 years now...I'm gonna have to be honest and say that If I had a choice between a 360 and a PS3...I would probably go with the 360. And not just because of the price
I don't think SONY deserves my money because of their stuck-up approach to the whole console. They make an update for the PSP that requires you to own a PS3 in order to use it. Then they make the console itself $600 and each game around $80+. Then they first decide that they are only going to release 400,000 in the U.S. so everyone goes crazy trying to get one, and turn around and go "just kidding" and laugh at everyone...IMO SONY is just a bunch of assholes right now... :x

No idea if the DVD player is dual sided or not.
I believe both consoles have some great ideas and great titles, I am sure, will be available for both. I look forward to owning a PS3 at some point too. As it stands I am VERY much impressed with the 360.... just the same as I was with the original Xbox... the original playstation never really grabbed me like the 360 has because I think I was more into PC's then and had high end graphics cards etc so the Playstation never really rocked my boat... made lots of money with games though  ... never had a PS2 but a few of my mates did and they said it was a great bit of kit. I believe that companies cannot promise to stick with a product line for five years as the market changes so quickly that they would be commiting industrial suicide if they just stood still for five years.... think this was just a statement to encourage customers to buy the product. Dirtbiker has some points to his posting I must admit.... the shody way SONY has handled the situation with the trading company (Lip sat Sonk or some such tea  ) is just dispickable... but yet again perhaps we are not privvie to the whole situation. Different ploys are used by many firms to drum up sales especially on new models of what ever manufactured product. Do you think the 360 was rushed? man if that's the case I wonder how much more AWESOME the unit would have been if they had taken their time with it. Des  |

I have said it before and will say it again, 50gb Blu-Ray will do nothing but promote lazy programming, bad compression and pointless annoying cut scenes. Besides, if a 360 game requires 20+gb, all it would need is to come on two disks (as it cane read a dual layer which makes each DVD over 9gb). You then make the second disk inaccessible without the save that is written at the end of the first disk. Would this inconvenience me? No. Also, eventually games will start appearing on HD-DVD for the people who have bought the HD-DVD player. You will then have games coming in two formats - multi-disk DVD and one disk HD-DVD.
Obviously, I'm not stupid enough to claim the 360 hasn't got a disadvantage due to the decrease in storage space on it's media. However, it isn't as bad as everyone is making out (especially fan boys like Ryder).
