What range did you expect? I think you are confusing wi-fi with mobile phone communication and were perhaps expecting to play PSP multiplayer like an online PC or Xbox Live. It doesn't work like that. The range wi-fi has is ideal for what it was designed for - wireless networking.
Oh, and you must live in a country mansion if 100 feet means you can only play in your house

You seem to be confused about this. The PSP's wi-fi is not really for internet use, but rather for playing directly with someone else with a PSP. Like N-Gage but with longer range (N-Gage is bluetooth). If you connect the PSP up to a wi-fi broadband router there will be a way to play over the internet but that is a different than what you seem to be talking about.

To play "online" your PSP must be near a hotspot. You can have a wireless network at your house and play online there or you can connect if there's a hotspot at the mall or coffee shop or something (they're popping up everywhere now). If you're online (depending on the game, some don't support online play) you'll be able to play with anyone in the world kinda like Xbox live except for free. However, there is a program you can download for free which will allow you to play online even if the game does not support it. Basically, it makes your PSP think your computer is another PSP and it'd be like you were playing wireless multiplayer. You can get the software at http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/
