Shame. Looks like the PS3 is going to be the killer of Sony.

$599 is the retail price but the per unit build cost is more like $899!!!
Consoles are always sold for less than the build cost hoping the games sales will make up the loss.

Last time Sony beat the Xbox by releasing first and getting the system into the market place. Sony's missed this, this time round thanks largely to Blu-Ray, yet another Sony format that might bomb (think BetaMax and UMD movies).

I also heard that they've lost the next GTA release to Xbox360!

It's going to be tough, Sony definatly has it's work cut out for it

this is weird.. the american is 20GB is $499 american right? cause that equates to $648 Australian dollars.. how come its an extra 200 for us? people i know are thinking of importing it from america cause of this..

Not lost it no. They will no longer have a release console exclusive like they have had previously. Although both GTA III and Vice City are available for the Xbox, they were not when the games were first released - both were PS2 exclusives for at least six months after. GTA 4 will be released on both the 360 and PS3 simultaneously which is not a good thing for Sony. However, with the delay in the PS3 release and the subsequent high sales of the 360 they really shouldn't have expected anything else.

But Australian Dollars and American Dollars share nothing other than the name. Your currency has always been worth less so therefore you will pay more dollars per item.

How about the whole Blue-ray thing? Is that not a commercial catch for Sony? I know core gamers won't care but it could be the deciding factor for some. also, does final fantasy get played on an Xbox?? Some people may get the sony just to play this game?

Just trying to understand SONY's advantages, given that the playing field has been considerably levelled by Microsoft.

Insights welcome.

PS3 is DVD HD playable as well(which is what the 360 is) so even if the blu ray didnt work out then they have other options. I dont think it will come to that.

Oh and pagnell, the ps3 wont be the end of Sony, IF(big if) sony do crumble it will be because of microsoft, but they wont. Sony are one step ahead, they take the chance, thats why they are top, yeah this console is going to be a rough patch for them, but id like to see microsoft keep up with them, in terms of spec with the next xbox and still be cheaper on price.

Pay cheaper, get cheaper. Thats my motto
