Default 2.7 firmware - do not upgrade if you want homebrew.

Fanjita, the father of the GTA exploit, has taken a long hard look at Sony's new firmware and, in regards to homebrew, doesn't like what he sees.

Quote:
- Homebrew does not work on v2.7. The GTA exploit is thoroughly patched, and the TIFF exploit is still patched. If you like homebrew, DO NOT UPGRADE.

- We have no idea when homebrew will be available on v2.7. We need a whole new exploit, which could take some time. In our opinion (shared with EdisonCarter) there is no future for the GTA exploit on v2.7.

- LocoRoco is an encrypted, signed EBOOT. The only way to run homebrew in the same way is to get Sony's encryption key and sign the homebrew. That's not going to be possible in our lifetime.

- There could well be an exploit to be found in all the new function, e.g. flash player, AAC support, etc. We're not actively working on one.
There might be an exploit to be found in another game. We're not actively working on one.

- There's no truth in the rumour that v2.7 has made us angry, and that we're going to work on an ISO loader as revenge.

- The LocoRoco demo REQUIRES v2.70, even if you hack the PARAM.SFO in the EBOOT. It's pretty cool, but there's homebrew that's cooler.

- Once again, the most important point: If you don't think that slow support for an old version of Macromedia Flash, and support for the very latest games, is worth trading for homebrew for the next few months - then DO NOT UPGRADE.
It also seems, judging on point three above, that the recent rumour of Sony allowing signed homebrew to work isn't going to happen. Personally, I will be sticking with 1.5 until either it becomes impossible for the hackers to make loaders that allow the newer UMDs to work or a killer feature is added to the firmware that I can't live without. Neither has happened so far so it's still homebrew for me.

But why upgrade when there are no games that require this firmware as of yet? From what I have read the flash support is so bad as to be almost useless and it offers virtually nothing over the previous firmware. Even if you are not that bothered about homebrew it seems a bit pointless. What have you gained? A demo of a second rate game and slow flash support with no sound.

Still, to each his own.

Not played it myself so perhaps I was a little harsh. My point was that upgrading for what is little more than a demo and crap flash support seems a bit pointless. If there were full games that required 2.7 that you wanted to play it would be a different matter.

The flash support is TERRIBLE. I was so excited when I heard about it - I mean old games like homebrew but in flash with small file sizes and no need to a emulator?

Then it turned out to suck.

Well, I dont really care too much for homebrew, because I personally like games made by big gaming companies better than games recreated from 1995 by some dude.. Not that that wouldn't be cool... but anyway, I'm able to watch video's on ebaumsworld.com on my psp WITH sound, so before you go blurtin stuff out, understand what your dealin' with mmmk?
