December 1994 marked a very special occasion in the history of video games with the launch of the original PlayStation, the PS1. Selling over 100 million units in less than eleven years, PS1 became the first console in history to achieve this milestone. Now though, two generations on, with PlayStation 3 on the horizon PS1 production has been stopped in order to free up manufacturing resources for PlayStation’s grandson PlayStation 3.
![]() As well as holding the record for being the first console to sell over 100 million units the PS1 became a 90’s icon. Revolutionizing gaming and single handedly introducing adults into gaming with games like Grand Theft Auto, Tomb Raider and WipeOut, the console will no doubt remain a cult favorite along with the ZX Spectrum and Atari 7800. Although the console’s appearance in public has become increasingly rare as time marches on, there is probably not a single reader here who cannot fondly remember a certain title or specific moment locked in mortal combat with a friend or family member. Fortunately in the technology industry there is always something better on the horizon. In the case of the PlayStation we’ve already had the PS2 and the PS3 should be entertaining us before the end of the year. For those feeling nostalgic, however, Sony has announced that it is working on an emulator to let PlayStation titles run on the PSP. It will publish full details at a later date, but we at PS3Portal.com could go for some WipeOut 2097 right about now. I suggest everyone check out ps3portal and your faith in sony will be returned. And those XBOX 360 fanboys go to the site and try to find on thing thats better on the xbox than the ps3. Come on sony!![/img]

1) The main one - you can buy it now. Quite important this. 2) You don't need to break the bank to buy it - at their present 'new features' announcement schedule, the PS3 is going to cost at least $400 and possibly as much as $500 unless Sony are prepared to take a very large hit on each console. It's normal for a manufacturer to lose money on console hardware but a line has to be drawn. The main challenge is going to be in persuading parents that is isn't just for their kids but is for the 'whole family' - this will be the only way people would be able to justify the outlay. 3) The 360's spec is fixed, here and brilliant. A lot of the PS3's spec is nothing but Sony hyperbole in a desperate attempt to stop potential customers buying the 360. Like I have said previously on this forum, they did exactly the same with the PS2 and the Dreamcast. The difference is, Sega were amateurs in comparison to Microsoft and the 360 sales show this to be the case. I'm sure the PS3 will turn out to be very good (and probably even better), but for Sony's PS3 hype to turn into hard facts, comparing the 360 to it would have to be like comparing an Atari Lynx to a PSP and this simply isn't going to be the case. It's a pity but I suspect Sony will look a little stupid when the time difference in the release dates are taken into consideration and people realise the difference between the two consoles isn't as big as Sony would have liked us to believe.

I can understand what you are saying pagnell, and i agree the xbox 360 is a superb machine and yes its cheaper, but it is purely "you get what you pay for"
For example the xbox 360 may be £150 cheaper than ps3 will be but the ps3 comes with built in hard drive, the 360 dosent, the ps3 has wifi xbox dosent. So by the time you have purchased the accessories to make the 360 more to the specs of the ps3 the price is soon getting very similar. As for the fact xbox is out now........... good things come to those who wait I will say it again, the xbox 360 is superb and if i could afford to buy it aswell as the ps3 then i would. But the message was going to those anti sony people who think sony havent got the x factor any more, i mean the ps3 is the x factor.

Yes, you do get what you pay for but the line has to be drawn. The PS3 by the time it is released will have crossed the line which takes it out of the general console owners range. You have to look at the age and financial means of the average console owner - $400-$500 is going to be too much especially with the 360 available at a lot less with, what I believe, a minimal disadvantage in spec. Plus, you need to realise that just because the PS3 is going to have a better spec, it doesn't mean it will outsell the 360. The Xbox never did that to the PS2.

Absolutly, i feel all electronics are well over the line in price, including the 360, i could go through the XBOX specs VS the ps3 specs to show that actually the ps3 graphics will be noticably different. but instead im just going to post this link to a video.
http://www.ps3portal.com/downloads/M...Motorstorm.wmv if that dosent work try http://www.ps3portal.com/ps3/videos/30.html and follw the link. Pagnell, yeah the ps3 is well over priced but when i am going to pay over £200 quid on a game system i dont want to waste it on second best, so im going to wait around for the better. Can i ask you pagnell, when the ps3 comes out will you get it? this isnt to prove a point im just curious.

As for if I will buy one, probably. That is because I'm in a reasonably high paid job and can afford to do it. Most people who will want a PS3 aren't as lucky.
