You downgrade because you want the custom firmware but you are still running on 1.5. Basically you can gain advantage of all the latest Sony updates eg. Internet Browsing, PSP hot spot etc.

Downgrading from 1.51 and 1.52 to 1.5
Files needed:

2.00 EBOOT file
Upgrade tutorial
  1. You will first need to upgrade your PSP to version 2.00 so that you can use the 2.0 to 1.5 downgrader. To do this, first download the 2.00 eboot file above.
  2. Next, upgrade your PSP to version 2.00 using the 2.00 eboot you just downloaded with the upgrade tutorial. Don't use the PSP's network update feature.
  3. After you have upgraded to 2.00, the next step is to downgrade to version 1.50. Use the tutorial below to downgrade.
Downgrading from 2.71 to 1.5
Files needed:
2.71 Downgrader FULL
  1. Download and save 2.71 Downgrader FULL to your PC.
  2. Run Downgrader2.71Full like a normal program from your computer
  3. Select your language and press OK
  4. Read the notice and press Next.
  5. Wait for "Sponsored by" image to fade, check that your PSP is NOT a TA-082 PSP, check this by using the provided image, click the image then Yes if your PSP is compatible.
  6. Click OK to accept responsibility in the rare event your PSP bricks
  7. Connect your PSP to the PC via USB, enable USB mode on your PSP.
  8. On the PC, open "My Computer" and check which letter is given to your PSP, highlight the correct letter on the PC and click Next.
  9. The downgrader will now wright the files to your Memory stick. Once prompted, disconnect USB, click OK, click Next and on to the downgrade.
  10. Connect PSP to the AC adapter, and make sure your charge is more than 75%
  11. Go to the Photo menu, when it opens a red screen appears, if it dosent restart the psp and try again. When the red screen appears your memory stick light will blink, whilst its doing this leave your psp until the screen goes blank.
  12. Your PSP should switch off, turn back on and a data corrupt message will appear. This is fine, press O to continue to configuration.
  13. After configuration, go to System > Sytem Settings > System Information. If all has gone well you will be on 1.5, reformat your memory stick to delete all installation files. Enjoy!!
Downgrading from 2.8 to 1.5
Files needed:
HEN for 2.8
2.80 Downgrader
1.50 EBOOT

Installing HEN 2.8
  1. Download HEN 2.8 above, and unzip the folder using Winrar or similar.
  2. Copy all contents of "MS_ROOT" folder, to the topmost folder of the momory stick. Click replace on all files, this will not delete nothing.
  3. Start your PSP and go to PHOTO and open the HEN_280 folder, if it freezes or shows a red screen, just restart your psp. If it turns pale blue then the files have been written correctly and your psp will restart.
TIP: If the HEN dosent run straight away, press triangle and run the slideshow.

Test that HEN is working by starting the included Cube demo found in Game.
Installing 2.80 Downgrader
  1. Download 2.80 Downgrader and unzip the folder using Winrar or similar.
  2. Copy the contents of MS_ROOT into the top most folder of your memory stick.
  3. Download official 1.50 EBOOT, rename it to "UPDATE.PBP" and place in PSP>GAME>UPDATE.
  4. Run 2.80 HEN if not already running. If you have a TA-082 (Check here) you will need to run the 2.80 ID storage changer found in Game.
  5. Run the downgrader, shown as "Update X.YX" on the psp.
  6. Press X to restart psp, on blue screen press O, enter your settings, and you have a 1.50 PSP.
Downgrading from 3.03 to 1.5
Files needed:
3.03 Downgrader
1.50 EBOOT
A copy of UNPATCHED version of GTA LCS, has 2.0 update on it.
  1. Copy the contents of the folder MS_ROOT from the 3.03 downgrader ZIP to the memory stick.
  2. Unzip the 1.50 EBOOT, rename the EBOOT.PBP to UPDATE.PBP and copy it to PSP>GAME>UPDATE
  3. Load GTA LCS
  4. It should get to loading savegame, then the screen will clear to black and fill with a light blue colour, then the PSP will reset itself.
  5. Check that HEN is running by going to system settings, then to "System Information" and it should show up as system version 303 HEN.
  6. If it is showing up as HEN then go to the memory stick and run UPDATE X.YZ
  7. If you have an unpatched TA-082 or higher motherboard, you will be prompted to allow the downgrader to patch your motherboard so it can be safely downgraded. The downgrader will not let you proceed without patching, if your motherboard requires it.
  8. Before the downgrader does anything to your PSP it will ask for you to agree to what it is doing, if you no longer want to continue press the Right Shoulder Button (R-TRIGGER).
  9. Once you have agreed to start the downgrade do not unplug the PSP, or try and restart it. Once finished the PSP will ask you to press X, and reset itself.
  10. If it comes up saying that the settings are corrupt, press x to continue, this will mean you will need to re-enter the settings for network connections into your PSP.
  11. Load the included NetConfigBackup application in your PSP, and select to restore, this will take the backup that was done of the network config that was done automatically during the downgrade.
  12. You now have a 1.50 PSP
Downgrading from 3.50 to 1.5

Here is a guide for downgrading any current PSP hardware version
(TA-079 - TA-086) from firmware 3.50 to 1.50.

VERY IMPORTANT:
If you have a TA082+ motherboard and you downgrade to 1.50,
currently you will be unable to upgrade to 3.30+ Sony firmware. This is due to Sony blocking updates when the PSP has been modified to run 1.50. There will be an application released later which will allow users to revert the changes. If you are using a TA082 motherboard then I would suggest just using 1.50 or OE until an application is released.

Files needed:
PSP 3.50 Downgrader (Package)
1.50 EBOOT
3.50 EBOOT
Lumines (EU or US version only currently)
  1. If you have a 3.50 PSP skip to step 6
  2. Download 3.50 update from here: File Details-PSP-Firmware-3.50-(North-America)-PSP -
  3. Unzip and place the file in <pspdrive>:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE
  4. On the PSP, run the 3.50 update from the memory stick under the Game menu.
  5. Delete <pspdrive>:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE
  6. Copy the contents of the folder MS_ROOT from the 3.50 downgrader ZIP to the memory stick
  7. Unzip the 1.50 update to a temporary folder. Rename the EBOOT.PBP to UPDATE.PBP and copy it to <pspdrive>:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE/ . DO NOT OVERWRITE PSP/GAME/UPDATE/EBOOT.PBP!
  8. Load Lumines and press x to start the game
  9. The screen will clear to black and fill with a light blue colour, then the PSP will reset itself
  10. Check that HEN is running by going to system settings, then to "System Information" and it should show up as system version 350 HEN
  11. If it is showing up as HEN then go to the memory stick and run the x.yz update
  12. If you have an unpatched TA-082 or higher motherboard, you will be prompted to allow the downgrader to patch your motherboard so it can be safely downgraded. The downgrader will not let you proceed without patching, if your motherboard requires it.
  13. Before the downgrader does anything to your PSP it will ask for you to agree to what it is doing, if you no longer want to continue press the Right Shoulder Button (R-TRIGGER).
  14. Once you have agreed to start the downgrade do not unplug the PSP, or try and restart it
  15. Once finished the PSP will ask you to press X, and reset itself
  16. If it comes up saying that the settings are corrupt, press x to continue, this will mean you will need to re-enter the settings for network connections into your PSP.
  17. Load the included NetConfigBackup application in your PSP, and select to restore, this will take the backup that was done of the network config that was done automatically during the downgrade.

Pandora's Battery

NOTES AND RESTRICTIONS
  • The firmware in the Memory Stick is not a full 1.50, but a minimal subset. Therefore, not all applications (such as flashers, or recovery apps) will load.
  • Only Memory Stick Pro Duo are compatible. Memory Stick Duo (e.g. 32MB sticks) are not supported.
  • The IDStorage cannot be totally restored, as there is no known way to regenerate it properly.
  • It is strongly RECOMMENDED to make a flash dump of the PSP before any downgrading operation.
  • There might be a BSOD at the end of the downgrade. This is normal, and happens on the standard downgraders.
  • All hardware revisions known at this day are supported.
  • This release contains no Sony-copyrighted material. All required Sony data is generated from the v1.50 update files.
Files / Items needed:
  • Pandora's Battery
  • 1.50 Update
  • A spare PSP Battery. - Any make will do. Using a spare is best, as it will not be possible to boot the PSP in its normal state with the modified battery.
  • A spare Memory Stick - Pro Duo of less than 4Gb. (256Mb should be enough for all applications).
  • A PSP with a Custom Firmware - such as OE, M33 or WC, or a PSP with the 1.5 original kernel. (This means you need YOUR psp and ANOTHER homebrew capable psp)
Installation procedure (this is for the homebrew psp)
  1. Connect the PSP to the PC with the Memory Stick inside via the USB Connection.
  2. Format the Memory Stick using any utility (mspformat is included in the download)
  3. Remove the Memory Stick and disable the USB connection.
  4. Connect the Memory Stick again via the USB connection of the PSP.
  5. Manually create a PSP folder in the root of the memory stick (no folders should be visible), then, if the psp is 1.5, create a GAME folder inside of the PSP folder. Otherwise, if the psp has custom firmware, create a GAME150 folder inside the PSP folder.
  6. Copy the "battery" and "installer" programs to the PSP/GAME (optionally PSP/GAME150) folder. (These were included in the rar folder that was downloaded) Inside the GAME/GAME150 folder should have the following folders... pandora_battery, pandora_battery%, pbfirm_install & pbfirm_install%.
  7. Copy the 1.50 official updater as UPDATE.PBP to the root of the Memory Stick. (So now you should see UPDATE.PBP and the PSP folder)
  8. Remove the Memory Stick and disable the USB connection.
  9. Run "installer" through the firmware on the PSP. (found under game section of your psp) This application will create the firmware files on the root of the Memory Stick, as well as msipl.bin
  10. Connect the Memory Stick to the PC again via the USB connection of the PSP.
  11. Execute "msipl" application on the PC with the msipl.bin to write the IPL to memory stick.
  12. Remove the Memory Stick and disable the USB connection.
  13. Execute "battery" application on the PSP to modify the battery (Again, found in the game section)
  14. Congratulation, you are now in posession of a "Magic Memory Stick" and a "JigKick Battery"
Usage (this is for the Bricked/downgrade psp)
  1. Insert Memory Stick into the PSP
  2. Remove power cord and insert the JigKick Battery into the PSP
  3. A menu appears when the PSP boots. Follow the onscreen information and instructions
