    Birthday disaster please help !

    Hi Everyone,
Bought a pink PSP for my daughters Birthday (8 today).Mint condition but bought second hand before Christmas as didn't know how tight money might be
    now.
Apparently it was supposed to be good because it was "system software version 1.50" so you could do more stuff ????
Unfortunately being a Dad , got it (But know nothing at all about PSP's).Was well chuffed to get her a pink one and forked out for "Little Big Planet Game".
Put it in and was met with message "To start, you must update system software"
Scrolled down below GAME symbol to where it say's "PSP Update ver 6.00" ,clicked on it, it then says PSP with coloured background and a tune, then screen goes dark for a few seconds as if updating , but then the screen re-appears saying : The system configuration of this PSP
system does not appear to be correct.
    Contact technical support for assistance.
    (DRNFFFFFFD7).

So that all failed making it a disaster,so then tried to connect to internet for her to soften the blow. But this made it a total disaster.
    Put in SSID
Scanned picked up my SKY box successfully
    Encryption : WEP
Typed in WEP key ,but met with "The key you have entered is invalid.
Enter a 10- or 26- character key when
    using hexadecimal,or a 5- or 13-
    character key when using ASCII
    characters.

Also when I pressed test internet connection it come up "A connection error
    has occurred (80410D09)" .

As you can no doubt tell (I know nothing about these,so any help you can give will be deeply appreciated ,simple terms please).

Sorry for bothering you all,if your parents I'll sure you'll understand what a failure as a Dad I feel for ruining my daughters Birthday.
    Please help if possible.

    Best wishes,everyone.

    I feel your pain!

First think I would do, if confirm exactly what firmware you are running.

    Go to Settings>System Settings>System Information.

That should tell you the "system software". Exactly what does it say?

In terms of your connection, I haven't come across a Sky router. Do you have any model or manufacturer information?

    Hi,
    Thanks for reply,
It says : System Software Version 1.50

    "SkyBroadband Netgear" is on router.

I would look at doing a system update via "Media Go"
Sony Creative Software: Media Go: Download

1.5 is really old, so I don't know that is part of the issue..

For your router, Netgear's are normally OK. I assume you have other devices that can connected wirelessly (so the WEP key is definitely correct)? I would disable WEP, and get the PSP to connect first, then layer security back on.

If you get it to connect, you can also try a system update over wireless.

    Hi
Yes we have a laptop with wireless connection. Is there any chance you can
explain in detail, what to do regarding " I would disable WEP, and get the PSP to connect first, then layer security back on. "
Sorry, just so desperate and as you can probably tell (not very tech minded)
Thankyou ever so much, any and all help appreciated (just want to put a smile back on her face)

You will need to logon to the router. Not sure how you do this on that router, but it might be a case of connecting to http://192.168.0.1 or http://292.168.1.1

You will then be prompted for a login. This will probably be admin or administrator.

Once you login, you may see a checkbox for WEP, which you can click, or you may need to to go to another window (security settings, WEP, wireless settings, something like that). Once WEP is disabled, you may want to restart the router.

The important thing, is to make sure you also have a wired connection. The last thing you want to do, is screw up your wireless settings and not have a wired connection to fix it with.

    Hello there,

Happy Birthday to your daughter! I am sure you are a great dad and shouldn't be beating yourself up over this!! You did a lovely thing and I know she will be greatful. Coming on here you will get it sorted - no worries!

I am going to try and help you sort this out as easily as possible, until you can get your PSP online.

NB Can you please check for me that it is 1.5 firmware. If you go to systems settings, scroll down to system information. Click X and it will tell you what firmware you have installed. This is important BEFORE you follow the next seven steps. If it IS 1.5 then you can go ahead, if not please get back to me with the firmware version and I will talk you through the alternatives.

You need to manually download a PSP update for official firmware off the net. I would start with firmware version starting 2.0. Make sure it is an official Sony update and not a custom firmware update, as there will be loads on the net.
1/ Make sure the PSP is fully charged, if you need to check this you can go into system settings, check battery and make sure it is at 100%.
2/ Download the firmware update. The firmware update should come with a file named update.
3/ Connect the PSP to your laptop/pc via usb. Once the PSP is connected it will come up as an external drive, you will be faced with a screen with several different files. You need to select and double click on PSP. You will then have several more files.
4/ One of these files you will see will be GAME. Place the update file that you downloaded off the net inside the GAME file.
5/ Disconnect the PSP from the laptop/pc, switch it on, scroll to GAME and go down to the bottom and click on X.
6/ The update you should now see present on the PSP. If you click on X it will start the update process. You need to follow the instructions and accept the T&C before the update will start.
7/ Once updated it doesn't really matter what update you chose you should be able to update manually from the Little Big Planet disc.

    GOOD LUCK!
