Also, there is a program called Xlink Kai that you can use to play ad-hoc games on infrastructure mode. It tricks your PSP into thinking it's playing on ad-hoc when in reality you're playing it online. I know it works for Monster Hunter Freedom. You still need the router and stuff like that. (I'm not 100% sure what Xlink Kai is, but I have a general idea. Use it at your own risk!)

does anyone know how to use xlink kai? how would you find other people to play with without any lobbies etc.?
