Didn't think that possible thought it was something to do with the laser :?

Nope, I'm almost positive it's something to do with the laser.

It's coded into the PSP, not the laser. How would they even do that? Release a different type of disc in each region? Sony are tightasses, that would cost too much money.

Region restriction on DVD players (and the PSP) is about software and nothing to do with the laser or any other part of the hardware. All DVD players can play all regions, it's merely a question of whether the firmware software allows it. It is for this reason Dark_Alex's latest custom firmwares allow all UMD regions to be played on any PSP.

That's an awesome feature, one I'm sure Sony won't be too pleased about, I wish some one would hurry up with a 2.82 downgrader

Sony won't give a sh*t I imagine - they make money regardless of where the UMD is purchased. It's the movie studios that caused the region lock to be originally brought about.

There are other features of the new custom firmwares that Sony WILL care about but we won't go into that here.
