Default Getting a connection with out a router?

Does any one know how to get a connection with out a router? My brother has a way but he's unavailable right now so I though I would try here.

I think he uses his phone with an internet connection to broad cast a signal which he uses on his palm pilot.

I was wondering if that's how he does it or how I can do it, is that what blue tooth is? I want to be able to use the net any where in the world but most signals are protected, and I assume that even if they are not it would be bad to use some ones internet for free.

Oh and if my answer is some where already please post the link, thanks.

there isn't a way of connecting the psp to the internet without a router or using someone else's router (i.e. a hotspot, some hotspots are free and can be found in many places, just keep scanning for them as you walk around)

you can use your mobile to get internet access for your pc but that has nothing to do with bluetooth, bluetooth is just another way of sending data between 2 devices over a range of about 10m.

Your best bet is to buy a wirless router, or a wifi dongle to plug into your pc but trust me, the dongles are pure and utter sh*te

OK, let me clear up a few things.

The Palm Pilot would probably be using bluetooth. There are phones that work as WiFi clients but I don't think you could use them as a router.

Bluetooth: A technology developed for short range wireless data transmition. It was mainly to be used as a wirefree cable, so you don't have wires all over the place connecting your phone to a palmtop or your mouse/keyboard to your desktop.
The problem is that the data rate isn't brilliant, the signal is only very short range (100m max - there are some that do 300m but you would need both devices to support that, most do not)

WiFi: Medium range wireless data transmition. Created for wirefree networking. Built to be a transparent comms layer so that all programs that work over standard network protocols (eg. the internet, games, file sharing) would see it as a wired network connection.

The PSP only supports WiFi as odhranus said

When you connect a bluetooth phone to a PDA/Laptop it looks like a dialup modem. Maxs data rate would be 28kps far less than broadband speeds.

The new 3G/CDMA phones are fast enough for almost broadband speeds. Some do have built in WiFi. I don't have one myself but these may allow you to connect laptops over WiFi rather than bluetooth. In this case you could get a PSP going at a decent speed on the internet. Possibly....

So basically, check what the phone has.
Bluetooth = no chance.
3G + WiFi = possible(but you'll have to experiment.

Your best bet is either a legit hotspot, your own wireless router, nick someone elses unprotected connection

I have a wireless router at home but I have very little use for my PSP Browser as I can just use my PC.

I am planning a trip overseas and need a better option so I can check my e-mail.

What is the difference between a PSP connection and a Palm Pilot connection?

Thanks for the reply though.

Sorry cosmicnut didn't see your post before I replied.

Thanks for that it makes sense now

Is there any thing else besides a phone and router that will transit enough to get a signal to a PSP?

If not I guess I will have to find an open signal or an internet cafe

Edit: Does any one know of legit hot spots in Canada or the US? are they businesses or restaurants or some thing?
