can't update .. updater gives blank screen

my psp has 1.5, out of the box.

i tried running the 1.52 updater from a umd, and the 2.0 updater downloaded to memory stick.

both give me a blank screen with and 'x' and 'o' at the bottom. when i click 'o' i get the two lines that usually have the 'do you want to return home' text in between them. then i can go left and right and here clicks as if i am selecting options, and if i click x it will either go back to the blank screen, or go back home.

i would love to update to 1.52 so i can play madden. anyone else having this problem or know how to fix?
