Default PSP Region Compatibility FAQ

Will my Japanese PSP play USA games?

Yes, your Japanese PSP will play USA games. PSP games are region free. Developers have the option of region encoding games. However, no games have yet been said to be region encoded. More than likely, 100% of all USA, European and Japanese games will region free.

Will my Japanese PSP play USA UMD movies?

No. UMD movies operate on a region basis, much like DVD's. USA UMD's will not work on a Japanese PSP. HOWEVER, European UMD's will work, as Europe shares the same region as Japan. A USA PSP will not be able to play European or Japanese UMD's. USA is a region. Europe and Japan are a region.

Can I link a USA PSP game and a Japanese PSP game wirelessly?

This depends on a game. There has been trouble linking a USA game wirelessly to a Japanese game. Although both systems share the same hardware, the games are coded differently. Therefore linking cannot be guaranteed.

If you live in the UK, simply buy a UK UMD in any shop and it will work on your Japanese PSP
If you live in the USA, a USA UMD will not work on your Japanese PSP, so you will have to import a disk from either Europe or Japan.

Or do what I do, watch your movies on a laptop when on the move.

I would suggest to import from japan, the psp is the same, and will be able to play european umds, unlike the american psps. You can buy a converter to charge the psp if the chargers are different.

Something along the lines of "The region code is not compatible with the system"
