Default Invisible Folders

Hi and let me just be to the point. :-)

I just purchased a PSP, the seller has installed the cfw (3.80M33-5), and when I first connected it to my notebook, AVG 8.0 detected every single thing in the PSP's memory stick (ISO.exe, GAME.exe, PSP.exe, PICTURE.exe, VIDEO.exe, etc) as worms.

I thought 'tis was just the AVG acting up and I disabled the avg and double clicked the PSP.exe (but it didnt execute any program it just opened the ISO.exe like it was a folder with all the ISOs it contains), and suddenly the notebook slowed down to the point where I can do naught.

Then I rebooted the notebook, activated AVG, and a worm (VGOD.DLL) was found to have infected the notebook... the worm was killed but the damage has been dealt.

So after all that, I scanned the memory stick again, and deleted everything that was detected as threat by AVG. In the end, only the ISO folder was left behind. All ISO files remain intact.

However, there is something else, it seems the other folders (VIDEO, PICTURE, PSP, etc) are still in the memory stick, its just that I cant see them, just to say it, I still can use the PSP to play ISO games fine, no problem at all, it's just I can't update the firmware, since I cant see the PSP folder (but its there!).

Any help on this is very much appreciated!

HAve you tried to format the memory stick through the XMB?

It sound to me like u picked a modified version of firmware that has been infested with crap. there shold be no .exe files on the psp ms cos the psp cannot run .exe files. you shouldnt have tried to run them either. no matter how curious you were. You were right to be suspicious. If you cant change the firmware any more you'll need to get hold of a pandora battery and a genuine copy of firmware from a reputable source

Incidentally where did you get the firmware from?

But I have save data that I really dont want to lose, and I cant back it up either since I cant copy the save data folder (it's invisible).

Oh but, If I were to purchase another memory stick duo can I back up the save data?

And the cfw was installed by a seller which is not gonna get my business again for quite some time. :-)

take as many files from the MS as possible, it really does need formatting. The damage from viruses could be a lot worse than losing a save game. I'd cut your losses and format it (if possible) You got ripped off from the seller and he needs reporting

Yeah. Tis illegal To Hand Out Virus' With Your Purchase. Think Of it this way.

Seller: Here is your Brand Spanking New Computer
Buyer: Thanks. Now What do i do with it?
Seller. Connect Up All the wires Then Install This Virus.
Buyer: Ok. What Does It Do?
Seller. It will Wait A Few years Then Completely Wipe The data from Every Appliance You Connect, Thus REndering Some of them. Useless.

That was an example which ma have been exagerated just a little.

But You Never Know. Those .exe Files could do ANYTHING!

To the worst extent, what kind of damage can be done?

Right now I still can play what I want to play just fine and I can add new games, too.

Well. Just as long as you dont Run anything from the memory Stick (Except The stuff You Put on (Dont talk about ISO's here. We are not allowed) Then You Should Be fine. But I would Be carefull. Virus' Can Do alot of things.

They Might Not be designed to wreck Your psp or Computer. Maybe all that will happen is a little smley Face popping up (Not Likely)

To all: I managed to install a file manager in the PSP and finally solved the problem. The folders were in hidden mode and it seems all I need to do was to change that. Well, now the folders are visible, so I guess it really is what I really need to do.

Thank you all for helping. :-)
