Default Memory Slot

Alright so I recently acquired a PSP yesterday and realized, hey I need a memory card to save data! So I purchased a 3rd party stick this evening named CoreMicro Memory Stick Pro Duo. I put that into the psp and it says it doesn't detect anything. On the package for the mem card it says it can be used for PSP, it clearly states that! How come it won't detect the card? And what is the Adapter for? I have 2 pieces
