#

01-12.bmp: Embedded background on your PSP that changes monthly. On custom firmware, this can be replaced.

A

Ad-Hoc: A localized network used to play multiplayer psp games. (Ex. Playing in the same room with your friends)

B

Brick: PSP rendered dead. Firmware corrupted. The PSP may power on, but you will see no screen and it will not boot into the xmb.
(Related: Semi-Brick)

Bricker: A program designed to brick a PSP, or render it useless.

C

Cintro: Movie played at the PSP's boot instead of a image.

CFW: Custom Firmware.

Cold Boot: Opening image you see when you first boot the psp (such as the sony of america image on stock psps)

CSO: PSP .iso file that has been compressed to take up less space on the memory stick.

Custom Firmware: Independently coded versions of Sony's firmware: utilizing added features, the ability to play the latest games, and access to homebrew applications.

CWCheat: PRX file that allows the user to change aspects of a game and modify its parameters.

D


Daedalus: Nintendo 64 emulator for the PSP made by StrmnNrmn. Currently a work in progress. Does not run full speed yet.

Devhook: Program used to launch .iso files and homebrew as well temporarily booting you into a higher firmware.

DGen: Genesis emulator for the PSP. Runs full speed.

Downgrader: Program used to turn back a PSP's firmware and make it useable for homebrew

Dump: Extracting information from a source, such as firmware or umd.

E

Eboot: A .pbp file that allows the psp to execute homebrew applications

Emulator: Program used to imitate other video game systems. (Ex. Super Nintendo)
(Related: Roms)

Epsilon Bios: Bios files used with the Undiluted Platinum mod chip.

Exploit: A vulnerability in the PSP's firmware that allows unsigned code to be run. Thus, allowing homebrew and downgraders to be used.

F

Firmware: The PSP's embedded operating software. Stored on a flash-rom module.

Flash: Chips built into the PSP that store different aspects of the firmware. Can be accessed via custom firmware recovery mode.

Flash Player: Media player used to play .flv files. Also supports SOME internet flash websites.

FLV: Flash format movie that can be used by the PSP's flash player. Files downloaded in .flv format are viewable from the memory card.

G

Gameboot: Loading video on the PSP right before it loads a game, umd, or application. Custom gameboots can be used on custom firmware.

gpSP: GameBoy Advance emulator for the PSP. Runs full speed.

GTA: Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories. Used for downgrading 3.03 to 1.50 firmware.

H

Hello World: Small homebrew program used to show homebrew capabilities on newer firmwares.

HEN C (Homebrew Enabler Revision C): Application used to launch homebrew in newer firmwares.
(Also: HEN D)

HEN D (Homebrew Enabler Revision D): Application used to launch homebrew in newer firmwares. Updated version of HEN C.

Homebrew: Homemade games or applications coded by an independent programmer.

I

Infrastructure: PSP network used to find access points and get on the internet to surf the web or play multiplayer games.

ISO: Digital version of a optical based video game. Similar to a rom.

K

Kernel: Component used to control resources within the psp.

KXploit: Method of running homebrew by utilizing 2 folders. One with a % and one without. (EX: snes_TYL and snes_TYL%)

MAC Address: Number assigned to the PSP in order for it to be identified on a network.

Memory Stick: The PSP's memory card. Comes in various sizes, ranging from 32mb to 8gb.

MP4: MPEG-4. Video format used by the PSP.

MS: Abbreviation for Memory Stick.

N

Nester J: Nintendo emulator for the PSP. Runs full speed.

Proof of Concept: A coders prototype towards a future program.

PRX: A file which is an external plugin used in custom firmwares. It helps to customize the functionality of the PSP including adding new features. (Ex. Screen shot taker)

PSP: Sony's handheld portable gaming system. PSP stands for Playstation Portable.

PSP Video 9: Computer program used to convert video files over to mp4 to be played on the PSP.

Recovery Menu: Menu used to alter various settings on a PSP with custom firmware installed. Accessed by holding the R button during a cold boot.

Rip: Slang term used when extracting information from an optical source, such as a CD, DVD, or UMD. Similar to a Dump

Rom: Digital version of a cartridge based video game. (Ex. Super Nintendo game)

Root: Uppermost folder on a memory card. (Ex. C:\)

S

Semi-Brick: When the PSP enters a partial brick state, including but not limited to xmb problems, blue screen of death (BSOD) and a "black screen" at boot. Occurs only in Custom Firmware PSP's.

Snes9xTYL: Super Nintendo emulator for the PSP. Runs full speed.

T

TA-082: Motherboard update by Sony in attempt to prevent downgrading. Coders have found ways around it anyway.

TIFF: Known exploit using the PHOTO menu in a PSP.

U

UMD: Universal Media Disk. Sony's chosen format for games and movies on the PSP.

Undiluted Platinum: PSP Mod Chip. Allows two different firmwares to be used. It can also unbrick any PSP.

USB: Universal Serial Bus. The preferred method of getting data on and off of a memory stick. Requires a usb cable.

W

Wave: The animated wave you see on your PSP. Custom waves can be used on PSP's with custom firmware.

WMA: Windows Media Audio. Compressed audio format also supported by the PSP's audio player.

X

XMB: Cross Media Bar used to access music, videos, games, internet, and the PSP's settings.
