Default Broken UMD drive!!!

Well, my girlfriend's brother recently a PSP... Hes had it for a while, but recently the UMD drive has been acting up.
The UMD drive will open and close fine, but the problem comes from the drive's reader. When a UMD disc is in the PSP, the drive makes a noise, and does not recognize that a disc is in it.
I was wondering if anyone has any ideas about how to fix this, or if anyone has experienced similar problems...
Has anyone contacted Sony and tried to take them up on the warranty? I'd appreciate it alot!

Hiya Jeff,
Not heard of this before but someone did post that the UMD door didn't shut too well and that some units are noisier than others.

A direct warrenty with Sony is not something I believe has cropped up before and as your asking I presume you cannot go back to the retailer you got the product from?

Perhaps contacting Sony initially may render a few home solutions that you could try before sending the unit back to Sony.

Please keep us all informed as to the developements.

Best of Luck

The retailer wont refund the product, or fix it... They keep saying that its Sony's responsibility to make the replacement.

We will definately contact Sony and figure stuff out with them. I'm pretty confident that the warranty, (I was looking around Sony's website, "http://www.us.playstation.com/support.aspx?id=warranties#psp") will come through for me. Basically what the warranty is, is a 1 year (with proof of purchase), guarantee on the PSP. Without calling them yet, i couldnt tell how it would work, (with postage and all). I dont know if we have to drive it down to Sony's headquarters or what, but i'm sure we'll find out soon.

(The warranty was sorta funny, heres a quote...

"THIS WARRANTY SHALL NOT APPLY IF THIS PRODUCT:...(c) IS DAMAGED BY ACTS OF GOD, MISUSE, ABUSE, NEGLIGENCE, ACCIDENT, WEAR AND TEAR, UNREASONABLE USE, OR BY OTHER CAUSES UNRELATED TO DEFECTIVE MATERIALS OR WORKMANSHIP

anyways,
I'll let you guys know when i know.

Well, if the PSP isn't under warrenty if it breaks by itself or if you break it then what does it cover? Nothing... Just like my car warrenty...
You could try talking to Sony and they might send you another unit.

That is a standard get out clause.. nothing to worry about just them covering their coporate arses from people wanted a new PSP because it didnt work after they microwaved it etc....

Basically if your using it as laid out in the instruction manual and are not using it in adverse situations and it is not fit to function as stated then you have a claim.

Best of luck.

Oh and by the way what is the store that will not help you out??? because if it is a UK store you have the right to demand a full refund or replacement at the retailers cost.
It is his responsibility to do all the running around with Sony not you... and if this is not doine in a reasonably time frame you have the right to get a complete refund... name and shame the shop fella.

If they offer to buy it from you, send it to them in an e-mail or something. The pages don't need to be 10 feet long just because you want to post some unnessessary crap.

I'm trying to be civil here. If you want to argue some more, take it to Instant Messaging. I don't want this forum to be filled with your inane posts and half-assed comebacks.

Evening all.....

Warm in here tonight... 8)

Highjacker... nice offer there me old mate I am sure that giving Jeff the option will be appreciated.

I for one was interested in the picture but can see that some people might find them a trifle annoying.

So tell me how have you become the owner of so many bits and bobs?
Are you going to keep a stock of bits and bobs and perhaps continue to repair units on the side? If so I would love your private email addy so we could contact you at a future date or even pass it onto people who have problems etc.

Regards
