do u need it to put downloaded games on the psp? if not then what does it do and is there a risk of your psp gettimg messed up?

Modding the psp allows non official programs to run on the psp, these can be games or apps or plugins etc.

It also allows you to change the theme of your psp which is saved in the flash memory, otherwise inaccessible on a standard psp.
