Unhappy UMD read error

Hi I recently changed my mate firmware on his PSP (M33) and on homebrew it was sweet but the other day he called me and said he cant play normal umd games on it so I tested it my self and sure enough it wouldn't play , I could also here a funny whirring noise instead of a smooth spinning noise,
So I re flashed it back to the norm firmware and tried it but nothing.
So my question is have I done this to his PSP or is it just a fluke thing that it happened after I flashed it and also how can I fix it ( I thought it may be the laser)

Firmware cannot control the sound your UMD makes when it spins, and i doubt the firmware would stop a umd from running.

Have you tried a different UMD?

Sounds like you got a dodgey laser.
