Default New router

Hi everyone,

I posted a message a couple of days ago saying that I have a belkin router and asked if that would be ok for online play.

I used it to play fifa 08 online and found that when I pressed to do something there was a delay in the action taking place after I pressed it (lag).

I then changed to a netgear wgt624 router which is 108mbps instead of 54mbps.

I have still found the same problem and was wondering is there anything that can be done about it. I have been recommended to get this router by a couple of different people and it was about £60 so it wasn't a cheap one and I'm wondering is it good enough?

I have 3 bars of connection when I play online and have played against opponents who have the same.

Thanks for any help.
Gareth.

If you play any game online i gurantee there be lag. I don't think there was anything wrong with your router. Lag is normal on online play.

You net connection can be super fast, if someone elses is real slow then that will cause lag.

When people say i got 20meg download speeds, ignore them, its irrelevant. The upload speed of your net connection is whats important in online gaming.

Thanks for your responses.

I prefer my new router but I thought my other one would be ok anyway. I may get a stronger antenna for this router anyway if it is removable.

How can I set my upload speed and make it quicker and is there anyway that I can improve performance?

Thanks.
Gareth.

Not really, you can always try contacting your ISP (Ineternet Service Provider) and ask what they can do, you might have to pay a little more.

When i look at deals i look at upload speeds, download speeds have got so quick now that they have out grown the speeds most website servers can upload.

So a slight amount of lag is normal then?

If I increased my upload speed but my opponent didn't have a quick upload speed would the lag still be there?

Thanks.
Gareth.

Indeed, maybe not in terms of your controls being affected but for example if an opponent on a racing game was lagging, most likely you would see his car jump from one place to another.

But is my controls being affected due to lag? This happens when I have 100% signal strength on my online connection so I assume it is. My upload speed is 200kb is this bad?

Also, would it be quicker if I wasn't online on my laptop as well even though I am not using it?

Any help on how to help with this problem is much appreciated. How bad is anyone elses lag and is the controls being affected a common problem?

Thanks.
Gareth.

Yeah, turning off your laptop will improve it. But as i said, even someone elses lag could affect your controls.
