Default external battery help please?

Lo all, i bought a external psp battery on ebay recently... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d..._BIN_Stores_IT

and well i charged it over night, went to plug it into my psp yesterday when my battery was at 50%, and when i turned the external battery on, and it was plugged in...nothing seemed to happen, the internal battery continued to drain, and it was as if the external battery wasnt even there.

does anybody want to give me a slap around the head and tell me how to use these things?
