Default PS3 UK pricecut

So, the PS3 is getting a pricecut in the UK... good news yes? You would think so wouldn't you?

But that, apparently, is at the expense of the machine's backwards compatibility.

According to Gamespot, once the stocks of the 60gb model have sold out, no more will be made here in the UK leaving us with only the new £300 40gb model which does not have the ability to play PS2 games.

It seems Sony think this is a needless feature because "there will be 65 PS3 games available by Christmas". Now Sony, you seem to be forgetting a few things. One... 65 games isn't REALLY a great deal of choice. Two... PS3 games are damn expensive, so kids can't always afford to buy them. Three... a lot of people might consider replacing their PS2 with a PS3 if they can play their old games on it as well as new ones.

I think Sony are making a big mistake... any thoughts?

I will agree that Sony is making a big mistake when there is no longer a model with backward compatability available for purchase. Since there still is an option to buy a model that plays PS2 games I'm afraid I can't agree. As it is, they're just offering the consumer a choice.

If a consumer wants to have backward compatability they can buy a console that has it, or they can choose to save some money and buy a console that doesn't have it. I don't see how offering a choice is a mistake.

are they going to discontinue the 60gb model in the UK or not?

A friend I know has hundreds upon hundreds of ps2 games that haven't even been glanced at since he got his PS3, so some wont miss it

just been reading up on the 40gig model they're releasing, yes it's cheaper, but you also lose 2 USB ports and you wont be getting all of them memory stick readers, also the biggie of no backwards compatibility.

At the MOMENT they're offering the consumer a choice, which is great, that gets thumbs up from me... but once they discontinue the 60gb model all element of choice is gone and that is where they're making the mistake.

That's not true, once the 60 GB models are gone, they'll still have the 80 GB models which offer backwards compatability. They haven't announced anything regarding taking the 80 GB versions off the market, so unless you know something I don't my opinion stands.
