Default North America August 2007 Console Sales.

WII - 403.6K
Nintendo DS - 383.3K
Xbox 360 - 276.7K
PlayStation 2 - 202K
PlayStation Portable - 151.2
PlayStation 3 - 130.6K

The Wii going from strength to strength it seems but oh dear, the PS3 at less than half of the 360 sales? That is even a surprise to me. It seems the exclusives like Bioshock and the imminent Halo 3 have led to a surge in Xbox 360 sales. How desperate are Sony now for some decent games to sell their console?

Quote:
Looks like Michael Pachter was right as August's results for console sales report that the Xbox 360 has surged, selling almost 100,000 more units than it did last July, over than what Pachter predicted. The NPD group also reports that the Wii still dominates the charts, and the Nintendo DS is still the more popular handheld.

PS3 and PSP sales declined this month. PS3 sales slipped about 29,000 units in sales from last month. The PSP slipped more than 50,000 units in sales, but this is most likely in anticipation for the PSP Slim. The Wii and DS also declined a bit this month even though they're still on top.

I'm quite surprised at this too, I thought the price drop would mean the PS3 would be edging it's way towards the top, obviously not to beat the Wii as EVERYONE who is anyone is buying one. Again, great marketing by the big N.
Most people I know are going to get a 360 rather than a PS3. Sony still need to do a hefty price cut in order to catch up

The thing is that almost all of the 60GB PS3s were sold in July, and now the only systems they have in stores are the 80GB ones that are still $600. I don't see PS3s selling any better until another price drop or 2008 when games like MGS4 and Killzone 2 come out.

I think a big reason for the surge in sales last month was the (genius) marketing move of advertising the new lower prices at the end of every Madden commercial. I think this attracted a lot of casual gamers (ie. Maddenites) that didn't wanna hold out on buying a new system yet.

The real test of all the consoles will be this upcoming holiday season however, IMO. Usually summer sales numbers don't have that much of an impact in the overall sales for the year. Holiday season is where it's at.

In my Game interview they said they make 70% of their yearly profit over October - December.

But the same would apply to all the consoles across the board.

Pagnell has a very good point there.

You cant raise one, without raising the other. It will be interesting though.

I think nintendo are going to win, not sure about the 360 and ps3 though, it will be tight.

with the release of halo 3, 360 is going to surge this month, but for xmas I think ps3 will be supreme. Though it will be close

I think this holiday season the PS3 still doesn't have any huge hits like the 360 does (even last year it had Gears of War). Sure games like Ratchet and Clank are great, but I don't think its enough to pass 360, especially with Halo 3 and Mass Effect released.

Yeah, I agree. All I'm saying is that little differences now might not mean a lot in the big picture if the sales are the same or reversed come Christmas time.
