Default Firmware 1.60 out now. AWESOME! :D

Well, I was just lookin at QJ in comp apps and there it was, the release info for the March 2007 Firmware, the one that Sony built up so much hype for. I just have to say, I'm VERY impressed. I can't really even think of much more that I'd want for it, but they'll figure out some more things for it, I'm sure of it. Anyways, enough beating around the bush, here's the changelog:

Quote:
The PLAYSTATION®3 System Software version 1.60 update includes the following:

Featured Content

* Folding@home connectivity, background downloading of content from the PLAYSTATION®Store, support for Bluetooth® keyboards and mice, and an optional full QWERTY on-screen keyboard for text entry.

Folding@home

* The Folding@home project allows PS3 owners to connect to Stanford University***8217;s Folding@home program, a distributed computing project aimed at understanding protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases, such as Alzheimer***8217;s, Parkinson***8217;s, and many cancers. Using the power of the Cell Broadband Engine*, PS3 system can perform computer simulations for the Folding@home program ten times faster than your average home PC. Once PS3 system is updated to version 1.60, users can easily sign up to join the Folding@home program by clicking on the appropriate logo on the XMB* (XrossMediaBar) under the Network icon. Then, when the PS3 system is left on and reaches idle mode, it will automatically begin a simulation and, once completed, send information back to a central computer. Additional details about Folding@home are available at http://www.scei.co.jp/folding/en/.

Enhanced Downloading

* Firmware Version 1.60 also delivers a more convenient process for downloading content to the PS3 from the PLAYSTATION Store. Up to 6 pieces of content from the PlayStation store can be queued up for download while the user enjoys other functions of the PS3 system, including playing games, browsing the web, using media functions including photo browsing, video and music playback. Progress of downloads can be easily tracked under a new Download Management menu under the XMB***8217;s Network icon.

Remote Play by way of the access point

* This feature, enabling you to access photos, videos, andmusic on your PS3 system's hard drive from a nearby PSP® (PlayStation®Portable), will be available for the 20GB configuration, when utilizing an external Wi-Fi router or local wireless access point.

Bluetooth keyboard and mouse support / Full size keyboard

* Support for keyboards and mice enabled with Bluetooth wireless technology has been added. Text entry is further expanded with the option to use a full QWERTY on-screen keyboard, in addition to the existing single tap keyboard. PS3***8217;s built-in Web browser is also enhanced with the ability to zoom in to the optimal viewing size for the selected area of a Web page at the press of a button, as well as an optional tool for reducing flicker when the PS3 system is using interlaced video out (480i or 1080i).

Disc Auto-Start

* This new option under System Settings allows you to choose whether or not a disc should start automatically upon inserting the disc or turning on your PS3 system.

Blu-ray Disc Rewriteable (BD-RE) Support

* PS3 system can now playback BD-RE discs (version 3.0).
If you guys can think of anything else you'd want, I wanna know. :P

For the lucky few that have a PS3 and want to fold, it'd be cool if you could join QJ's folding group. :P 52781 for those who are interested.

Indeed, sod that!

Also, I have read that the PS3 still can't download and play online at the same time.

I want to know when the PSP is going to get a Friends List, access to the PS3 store, and what not.

The Xbox can download AND play online? At the same time?

What the PS3 does is it has background downloads, you can play a game, watch a movie, whatever, but when you play online, it pauses the download, but right when you're done online, it picks back up.

Also, Sony is working on a Playstation Store for the computer.

And if it's on for more than 10, 20, or 30 minutes, you're obviously not using it, so it starts the program(which is for a good cause...) It's not mandatory, you can set it so it doesn't start.

I thought you can't play games or movies while downloading. I didn't try it out myself, but thats what I read.

You can, you can't download while playing the game online though.

I think thats an awsome idea with the folder cancer thingy.

I read somewhere that a project is going down where a company is connecting 1000's of ps3's together to simulate the human body to cure things like that.

I know that pretty much whats happening here, but i mean in the same room, to create the worlds most powerful super computer. Currently owned by IBM i believe.

Anyways, does the bluetooth keyboard and mouse work on linux. I will buy a ps3 when i know it has all the features of a PC so i can do my work on it. As i need a new computer / laptop.

Great news about the upgrade gents. I hope that it addresses your concerns for the PS3 and goes along way to making your gaming experience better.

As for the cancer research thing.... similiar thing was out on the PC for SETI and then for some medical thing as well.
I am all for ANYTHING that helps the fight of cancer.
