Default More bad news for Euro PS3 buyers......

Just found this article which makes for pretty dire reading for anyone preparing to buy a PS3 in Europe.

A quote below:-

Quote:
Man, this is just getting ludicrous.

Not only are European PS3 buyers getting gouged in pricing terms - paying as much as 40% more for the console than our brethren overseas - but it turns out that European consoles are actually going to have less functionality, too.

How can this be? Well, in a bid to cut the cost of making the PS3, the hardware chips that enable PS2 backwards compatibility are being stripped out.

Stripped out.

The chips will be replaced with software emulation, with the result that backwards compatibility for European consoles will be, according to Sony, significantly less.
And people wonder why the PS3 hasn't met expectations. Let's hope it isn't true.

Ouch, that has to suck if its true. Personally I wouldn't be surprised if it is seeing how Sony striped out a $5 upconverting chip from the launch versions. On the other hand it doesn't mean that its very bad. The Slim PS2 had software emulation and I didn't hear about any problems with it.

If its on Joystiq, I'm 99% sure its true. I feel bad for European buyers. Not only they have to pay almost $1000 for their systems, now they get this... It doesn't seem fair, if you pay more, you should get more.

I find it almost funny how sh*tty Sony treats it's Euro customers - not only charging nearly twice the amount (after currency conversion) but now this. Suffice to say I'm even more pleased I bought a 360 now. I will be telling all the people I know who are stupid enough to wait for the PS3 about this because a lot of them are only doing it for the backwards compatibility as they own PS2 games.

A classic case of Sony aiming for their own feet with a double barrel and letting loose. Is it any wonder the PS3 (outside the fanboys) has so far been viewed generally as a big let down?

Man, I feel bad for everyone in the Euro... Sony just keeps shi**ing on them, over and over and over... That really sucks, I expect them to get their act in line, or else they're seriously going to fu** up and have NOBODY like them, sucks for them.

I think that if they had worked on the PS3 for a bit more, it wouldn't be a letdown to those of you who think it's one big letdown. As for I, I don't think it is, but I know there are a few, especially in this forum(:P), who do, so for those of you, Sony really needs to get their a** in gear.

To behonest im not bothered about that, why buy a ps3 if you gonna play ps2 games on it, sure you may already have ps2 games, but that also means you have a ps2.

Would be nice to have just the one console doing it all, but not a major problem.

Still not getting one until its the same price as the 360.

A test has been done on this - it does not look good.

Quote:
A German website called 'cynamite' has conducted a small test on the success rate of backwards compatibility on the PS3 (European). Seeing as Sony has now removed the hardware based edition of the emotion engine, many speculated as to how this would reduce the levels of backwards compatibility. Cynamite tested twelve popular PS2 titles on the machine, with just ONE of them working.
Article.
