Default "Install Other OS" Option??? Why is it there???

I know it's there so you can install other Operating Systems on it, but why would Sony want us to. I've googled it and than I found out that one of the OSs you can install is Linux, which brings me to wondering about 2 things.

1. Wouldn't Sony loose money and allow homebrew by allowing us to have homebrew and such on this supercomputer of a gaming console?

2. What would be the advantages of having Linux installed on your PS3?

Maybe Sony is planning to release a OS of their own, I honestly have no idea why they'd put that there, what do you guys/girl think?

Personally, the only reason I would want to do that is if the internet browser will become better. The current one is extremely slow. Does anyone know if upgrading the OS to Linux will still let you use all the features of the PS3's OS?

No, it's free, if it did, I'd be in SOOOOOOOOoo much trouble right now because I've called them so many times, I know like all what buttons to push and thier phone number and stuff. :P (I know what you're thinking "FAAAAN BOOOOOIII!!!!!!!" lol, but that's not the reason why I've had to call them so much, it's because I keep having questions and want to know when my PSP's coming back.:lol

Hahaha, seems like EVERYONE that answers the phone got fired.

I tried calling them, and instead of them putting me on hold, it says they're unable to answer the call :P
