Well...I just do this locally. I usually just help people get their systems together. I don't charge. I'm just part of the local gamer scene. You'd be surprised at how many don't know a motherboard from an optical drive...
As far as prices go. I'd say they've been spending between 1.2K on a tight budget, up to 3k or so. There are always substitutes...IE: going for the 6600GT instead of the 7800 GT, or GTX. A little cheaper ram that has tight timings instead of PC4000. I've been using PC3200 2-2-2-5 OCZ Gold. It's only $139 for a gb, instead of some of the stuff out there..price wise, it can get a little outrageous. It's all how far the wallet opens? Mine is basically full of cobwebs...smile. Also, the last build I did a couple of weeks ago. The guy had a 3800+ X2. It's a lower end chip as far as X2 goes, but it was smoking my test program like it was going out of style. Nice way to get into X2 on a budget.
The right combo is not always the expensive combo.
Best,
LC
