Ok I think I need to, well, format my laptop. I is running as slow as f**k and I think it has like a million viruses on it and every time I try to load Norton it becomes non-responsive.
So I need help with how to format my computer and reload Windows as I have never done it before. Oh and I have the Windows backup disc. Now what do I have to do?? Thanks guys. |

Well one thing you could do is go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore and restore it to an earlier state by following the instructions.
If that fails you could completely reinstall Windows by putting in the Install CD and booting from that instead of the HD. (watch your BIOS screen for a boot option hot key - ie F12 ) then just go through the process of installing XP (I assume its XP you have) which will format the HD to take place.

is it just recent, or has it been doing it for a while? You can try System Restore. Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore. You select a date to go back to. In removes all programs and some downloads after that date up until the date you did the restore.

How to reinstall Windows XP
I do suggest system restore though, if that dosent help then follow the above and leave norton alone. I use a free program called AVG, this can be downloaded from here. They have different types of security... scan, protect, etc etc, its free and it works well. Kev 8)

Just make a backup of everything you need on a couple CDs or something, than pop in the CD, and reboot the computer, than when it says "Press any key to boot from CD" Press any key, than it'll run through some crap, Than tell choose the top one, I forget what it is, than tell it to just completely reinstall Windows XP, not just repair it, it'll go to a screen about partitions, I usually delete the partition, than make a new one and install Windows on that, than when you continue past the partition screen, it'll ask you how you want to format, if you're impatient, do NTFS(quick), if you're not, I'd do NTFS(the not quick one) It doesn't take a REALLY long time to do it the long way, but than after that's done, it'll put some files on, than restart, this time don't push the button, just let it be, it'll bring you to a blue screen telling you that it's installing, Past that's self explanatory.
Also, I remember reading an article a while about about how you can get windows XP to Install itself by putting your LEGAL(NON-BOOTLEG) XP CD into the computer, than ripping a LEGAL ISO, and than changing some files, does anyone know what I'm taking about? Because that'd come in handy when I'm being lazy... |

Ok if your computer is running real slow first try downloading Ad-Adware and running a scan with that to delete all spyware off your HD. Then download AVG free and do a virus scan and delete anything that comes up. Restart computer and if its STILL going slow try a system restore back to a point where your computer use to run fast. If that doesn't help, Re-install windows by shutting down, press DEL button while you turn the computer back on. BIOS screen will load and mostly all BIOS are different but similar so just look for a option to BOOT From CD Drive. Pop in the cd restart and follow the instructions on screen.

Mine boots from CD then my main HD. I don't even have a floppy drive anymore. The reason it boots from CD is because I have a couple linux boot disc's which I occationally chuck in.
