Default PC Crashing - I need a smart arse!

Ok, every now and then my pc freezes, like i can move the mouse or nothing. It is a wireless mouse and wired keyboard.

When it crashes the light on the keyboard still flashes each time i move the mouse, so guessing its not that. Also, it is really slow now.

Do you think i have hardware issues? Or maybe just reformat my hard-drive as i know there are those pop up programs on it that i cant find.

Code:
Machine name: PC
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254)
           Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: GBT___
       System Model: AWRDACPI
               BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG
          Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+, MMX, 3DNow, ~2.1GHz
             Memory: 256MB RAM
Page File: 391MB used, 225MB available
        Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS
    DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
DX Setup Parameters: Not found
     DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.2180 32bit Unicode
That is what i have, any suggestions please.

Im thinking about 1 gig ram to help it out a bit more. Maybe because its like 3-4 years old now its got too much running built up over that time, i dont know. Anyways, any help would be brill!

The ram would help for speed.
As of for crashing it could be a virus, spyware, or malware.
Google AVG Antivirus, Avast and run a virus scan or use one you already have.
then google ad aware and download that and do a scan and delete evrything it finds and then see wat happens
if it continues repost and il try to guide you through sumething else

When did these problems start?

Have you tried looking at the task manager for any weird processes? I think the best place you could start would be to see if you can find any spyware. Then remove it. I consider reformatting a last resort.

Make sure the firewall is on. I think using firefox helps to prevent getting spy/adware too.

I consider formatting the first resort. I've tried it that way and it bogged it down even more. Back up crucial data and reformat.

Don't do that, I had the same problem so I reformatted and it still happened....I got an antivirus and it suddenly stopped....try looking for viruses, spyware, ect...

I'd get Mcaffe and use Firefox, it helps. Also, your computer's pretty faster, another gig of ram would make it really fast though.

Well i tried installing norton internet security, but that said crucial error in installing, so i would rather just reformat the whole thing to be honest. Then get firefox and norton back on it.

With the extra RAM it shouldnt slow it down too much.

Backup music, movies, pictures, and use the settings wizard to back those up and put them on a removeable drive you putfile or something. Reformat, then throw everything back on there.
