I thought i would bring this thread back to life, considering its mine and its about the same thing so here goes.

Ok, each time i turn my PC off, the next time it tries to start up it gets to the WINDOWS XP screen and dosent go past that. I have to manually turn it off, and then on again to be greeted by a "Safe Mode" option screen.

This is the only way i can get onto the PC again, unless i load into Ubuntu, which freezes most times i try using more than 3 programs at once. Anyways, i do a system restore, and i can get back on like i am now. But i can almost guarantee that next time it will do the same thing.

What i want to know is, should i just say to the parents, this is beyond me, the computer is 5 years old and is simply c*ap. Or is there a way to fix it.

As always, its me that has to do it, because i use it the most, but whenever someone else wants to get on then its "not just your computer".

Im hoping someones got an idea, because im baffled and to be honest am suprised only two of its expansion covers on the case have been kicked in.

Try underclocking the processor then booting it up. Slim chance but your processor could be knackered

Underclocking it?

Well i would but last time i tried messing with CPU speeds i had to remove the mobo battery to reset all the settings.

Also, firefox is playing up, its got that loading bar section at the bottom like 8 times bigger than it normally is. So i cant see much of the actual website.

Even this site is saying that i have no new posts, but i go into the section and it has new posts.

Man i need that new PC, must stop buying sxpensive clothes and gizmos for my bike. I got my bike running now, btw, its great... vrrooooom!

I would suggest, until you can get a new machine, that you just leave it on all the time. I may be wrong (correct me if I am Cabe) but I don't think they really use that much power when they're in sleep mode and I don't think it's very harmful.

I used to leave my desktop on all the time, I think at one point I left it on for like five months straight and it's still running like a champ.

I know, I know...it's just after burning $60 worth of gas every couple of weeks, it seems a little less harmless.

We DEFINITELY have a MAJOR part in Global Warming, lol, especially the fact that most people would drive to a place within walking distance. When I get a car, the only time that I'd do that is like early in the morning, than probably when driving back from school because it's about a mile or 2 from my house, which is to far to walk in the morning when I just wake up. Only other time would be when I have a LOT of stuff to get, or something really expensive.

I'm a bit of an energy hog though, my computer's always on and my TV's on a lot.

Ok, just thought i would update this topic, my pc has been crashing lots lately, you can literally time it and at bang on 5 minutes and BOOM, down it goes.

So my dad noticed this and got ****ed off with it and told me to find new parts, so here is what i got.

Mobo, i forgot which one, it has all the right connectors and ram slots and supports sataII-300 and what not.

AMD athlon 64 X2 (2.2Ghz)

1gig crucial DDR2 667mhz ram

320 gig sataII-300 HDD

Thats all that i need, the onboard sound and video cards are powerful enough to do the job of surfing the net and looking at porn etc.

all for £150 from good old ebuyer.com

Does the motherboard have PCI Express x16 slots? If not, I'd get one that does, because even though you might not NEED to, I'm sure there'll be a game that'll look da** tempting to play, and you'll be kicking yourself when you have to get a crappy little regular PCI video card that might not even play it.
