If you are using a home broadband setup, you probably are.
If you can, go to start>run and type "cmd" It should open a black command window (old dos stuff  ) in the window type, "ipconfig /all" You'll get a lot of technical looking stuff on the screen. You should see something that says "DHCP enabled". If that says Yes then the your PC and your router is running DHCP. As for config. Check the user manual, or if you don't have it check on the manufacturers web site for a downloadable one.

you should be able to access your router setting by the following in your browser address bar.
192.168.1.1 192.168.0.1 192.168.1.2 192.168.0.2 One of those should bring you to a username and password screen, usual default is admin, and password. Then you can change settings of DHCP, and other stuff. What cosmicnut said works aswell. Kev 8) |

You can tell the exact address of the router by followig my method and putting the numbers from the "Default Gateway" into the address bar of internet explorer
Just takes some of the guess work out of the game.

You dont need the router to be connected to the internet whilst on your PC, if your pc isnt near the router. I hope that made sense.
You can just plug it in to PC with ethernet but not Internet and the pc will access it with the addresses i gave above. Kev 8)
