Don't they normally release the high end cards first, and then work their way down? What happened this time?

well i think they did this with the 8 series too, there's the mid 8600 i think it is,then the 8800

Nope, the 8800GTS (600 something mb version) and 8800GTX were the first of the 8xxx series.

Well yeah, it was released as a low budget card. The question is why would they release a low budget card first...

Also, any idea if this natively runs DX10.1?

Its not better than the 8800.

They one you might want to look into is the 9800gx2 which is supposed to come March 11th. It is rumored to have a 30% performance boost over the 8800ultra, unfortunately it is supposed to be priced at $400.
