Default Finally set up and got RAID working! :D

If you've been here for a while, you know that I like to post about my achievements. This is one of those posts.

For the last couple days I've been working on getting a RAID Array set up on my computer for the last couple days, haven't had ANY luck, had to reinstall Vista at LEAST 5 or 6 times. But I FINALLY got it! The last 3 or so installs worked, but every time I'd turn on my PC I'd get a message about some drivers that didn't install right.

I found out that in order to get Vista to be compatible with the Array, you had to load some drivers around the 4th install. Than the 5th install, I had the wrong drivers, but the 6th install I finally got it and there was no more messages about those da** drivers.

Anyways, it's 5 AM, I'm just kinda getting everything back to how it was before now. I'm probably going to head off to bed pretty soon.

For those of you (probably most) who don't know what a RAID Array is, it's when you combine 2 physical Hard Drives to form 1 logical Hard Drive. For example, I have 2 55 GB Hard Drives in my computer, however, my computer sees it as 1 111 GB Hard Drive.

I worked so hard to get this SOB to work at first because 55 GB was REALLY small, but than it turned into more of a "ARGH!!! THIS THING'S NOT GOING TO BEAT ME!!!" ordeal...

I thought RAID was like some sort of performance boost technology for HDD's? Oh well, i know mines got it, dunno if its running though.

Ok bam You seem to know what to say...

I know someone who has a 500g external HDD and he cant get it to work with an XP computer. He wants to make it so it turns on when the pc goes on and off when the pc goes off.. I think he also needs to know how to put programs on it so the pc runs faster instead of having everything on the primary one. He needs to be able to run the programs directly off the External one. The External HDD Has a mains power source so is this all possible and what does he need to do...

Thanks in advance

external ones are usually slower, so i wouldnt advise with putting programs on it. just extra data, like songs and videos.

i may be wrong, but i think it depends on the hard drive for when it powers on and off, be it manually or automatic with a shut down.

Thanks But i would have thought that since it was 500gb that he would be able to put some programs on it. I would probably say to put the ones that he doesnt use too often on it...

the size doesn't mean anything, just it's capacity. the bigger the drive, the longer it usually takes too, as its more room to search. the rpm, or revolutions per minute, is the speed of it, and external hard drives are usually 5400 i think it is. internal are usually 7200. you can notice the difference... also, if it connects to the computer via USB 2.0, that hampers the speed even more

Well, when he's installing the program, there should be an option to install to whatever directory you want. Just install them to the external Hard Drive from there.

Also, that would REALLY suck if one failed, however, if they both fail, that'd be a better *knock on wood* because it'd give me a reason to get a single like 200 GBish HDD.
