Default Router installation/repair?

hey guys i have a question... we have a wireless router in my house.two actually. one is in the basement and the other is in my room, two floors up. my brothers laptop was set up so it would work via the wifi, but its wep protected. my dad set this up but since he passed away, no one knows what he set the password to it on so only one of three laptops can get onto the wifi network.

i THINK the router thats being used in this is in my room. is it possible to recover the password somehow? there is no record of it anywhere..

would buying a new wireless router so we can set our own password fix the problem?

also, if we need to install the new router, is there anything special to it? its just a wifi linksys router. im assuming you just plug it into a wired router and your good to go, which is what its going on now.

thanks

The laptop that is connected to the router will have the password saved onto it, however this will be encrypted and you wont find it in no txt document.

What you can do is access the router through the laptop that has access to it and find/change the key on that.

type in 192.168.1.1
or
192.168.1.2

change the last two around using 0, 1, 2 and it will be one of those.

There is a way to find out the IP address but i forgot.

Anyways, a username and password screen will appear, now at default the user name is: admin

and password either "admin" or "password"

If that works, then your in, go to wireless settings and it will be there.

If not, you could try the master reset button.

Here are all the possible solutions...

192.168.1.1
192.168.0.1
192.168.0.2
192.168.1.2

I think thats it, one of those should work so you can get to the main setup section and put encryption on it. Because if you dont, you can kiss goodbye to your download limit.

Well, yeah you could because that gives you access to the router and its settings, and then enable the security on it.

Here is a little tutorial for you...

PIC #1:
  • Run the command prompt on your PC (on vista it is found in accessories folder)
  • type ipconfig and PIC #1 will appear
  • Copy down the Default gateway address
PIC #2:
  • Open internet explorer / firefox and type in the default gateway address as like the pic.
  • the screen will appear like the pic (it may look different between each router.
  • My username is admin and password is password
You will then be greeted by a menu thats pretty self explanitory, just go to wireless settings or something similar and look for security.

Hope this helps.
