4Gb of RAM on XP is only overkill on the 32bit editions, they can only address 4Gb of memory at max so I'd say the optimal is 3Gb, anything more than that is overkill.
3Gb will give a performance boost over 2Gb.

If you have the 64bit edition you could stick as much RAM as you want in. 8Gb would really be the max because that would be 4x2Gb sticks and thats pretty much the largest sticks you can get atm.
