Its really accurate, you can point it exactly where you want it without any problem.

Its perfectly possible to miss it. There was one shot where, in real life, you would use a backhand but I swung just like a forehand shot so my character did the same thing and, thus, missed the ball >_<
If you swing backhand etc it picks up what you are doing extremely well.

I don't think it matters, as long as the Wii-mote has a clear view of the sensor bar (only really needed for pointing and so on) its fine. Wii Tennis doesn't use the pointing function in game, just the accelerometer.
Standing/sitting just depends on the player I guess. I stood up for Tennis but I'd imaging i'll be spening most of my time sitting while playing games like Zelda.
As for the range, I've seen a video of someone playing Wii bowling with a wii-mote about 400 feet away from the Wii
