Quite a few things like ease of use for one. The main difference is that kernal access is available on 1.5 and not on 2.8x (hence the reason no downgrade is available for these firmwares). And to top it off, soon Devhook will be able to emulate 2.80 and 2.81 perfectly which means you can have the best of both worlds on 1.5 but not on 2.8x.
And you say emulation but homebrew would be a better expression. Emulation is just one available aspect of homebrew.
