Like you said, we see things differently. I personally don't get this Japanese gaming culture, or at least the Final Fantasy side of it. However, I can certainly appreciate that people do and obviously don't have a problem with it. You stick to your Final Fantasy and I will stick to Baldur's Gate and Elder Scrolls.
As for the games still being made and still selling strong I don't really put much credance in that. Quantity of sales and longevity of a particular brand has never been an indication of quality.
