Some themes are version specific, so its best to find out what themes are safe to install with your firmware. Historically, custom firmware has much greater ability to alter the appearance of the XMB than official firmware does. This greater abilty to alter themes comes from the fact you can access the flash memory (internal) which is approximately 25mb in size and stores the firmware (operating system). Understandably, the risk is clear, altering these files can result in a brick. Its important you get the correct theme. Gameboots (aka coldboot) also require custom firmware i believe, my knowledge is limited on this area though. some forums specialise in this. There are also some good guides on Youtube.
